Bigbury on Sea BeachSituated on the ground floor of a large privately owned property, directly across the road from acres of safe, sandy beach, the one only self-contained GARDEN APARTMENT at FOLLY RISE enjoys unshared privacy in a 5* location at tariffs far less than those marketed by holiday rental companies.

The recently refurbished Garden Apartment has an appropriate coastal theme with a spacious lounge/dining room which is attractive and comfortable, with a flat-screen TV, DVD player with an up to date selection of DVDs for all age groups, radio/cassette player. There are two bedrooms, 1 with a double bed and the other with 3’ twin beds. The kitchen is very well equipped with electric stove, microwave, 2 refrigerators, (one larder, the other with freezer compartment), washing machine and spin dryer and a Coffee machine(?). The bathroom has a Bath, an over bath electric shower, toilet and wash basin. We have put in place grab rails to assist more vulnerable guests to get in and out of the shower and there is a wall mounted heater plus central heating radiator. Being centrally heated throughout the apartment is an ideal year round location.

View of Burgh IslandThe Garden Apartment is just a 3 minute walk down through the garden to acres of magnificent sandy beach which is safe for all ages, with its facilities of Beach Cafe, Showers and Toilets and R.N.L.I. Life Guards from May to September. Popular with Surfers, Stand-up Paddleboarders, Kyakers, Windsurfers, Kite Surfers, our own local Discovery Surf School and, of course, fishermen.

Do remember to bring binoculars, as Bigbury Bay presents an ever changing scene. The speed and acrobatics of the windsurfers never cease to amaze and you will see the Royal Navy, Luxury Liners on the horizon and elegant yachts at anchor off Burgh Island. This is an off shore island made famous by Agatha Christie and the secret haunt of the Prince of Wales and Mrs Simpson in the 1930s. There is a Five Star Hotel, often seen on TV and the location for Agatha Christie's Poirot's "Evil under the Sun", where one may dine and dance in the Art Deco surroundings. At low water you can take a 500 yard stroll across the sand and walk round the island up to the Huer’s hut, originally the site of a 600 A.D Monastery, and latterly used to alert the local fishermen that pilchards were in the bay. Why not stop for a drink at the 14th Century Pilchard Inn built in 1336, haunt of the smuggler Tom Crocker. At high tide do not miss the opportunity of riding on the unique stilted sea-tractor, which conveys visitors back to the mainland. If you're lucky you may even see a pod of dolphins playing in the bay- check out the first video below to see them.

Set in the heart of the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close by are numerous places of interest including the sophisticated yachting centre of Salcombe, historic Dartmouth and Plymouth with their connections to Sir Francis Drake and the Pilgrim Fathers.

Wonderful coastal walks, bird watching, sailing, surfing, windsurfing and deep-sea fishing are just a few of the many activities available and Bigbury boasts its own 18 hole golf course just a mile away. The views are so spectacular they will play havoc with your handicap! Golfers and visitors can enjoy the excellent Bar and Restaurant in the Clubhouse.

10 miles hence there’s wild and rolling Dartmoor with it's ponies and heather. The National Trust have many glorious gardens and fascinating historical houses to visit. For the children there are theme parks, children’s farms and leisure centres - AND OF COURSE THE FABULOUS BIGBURY ON SEA BEACH!

We have a wide range of wetsuits, surfboards, boogie boards, wind-breaks and beach gear for your use at no extra cost.

Regretfully- no smoking or pets.
